Join the AIA Regional & Urban Design Committee for our series exploring and defining equity and social impact in the communities we study, engage, and design to develop professional practice. Redlining and blockbusting have been outlawed for over 50 years. However, in contemporary transportation and environmental design, zoning and building practices, as well as community engagement implementation, we continue to see its systemic and harmful legacy through “seen” and “unseen” inequitable practices.
This panel seeks to identify how these inequitable practices are leading to greater displacement and residential segregation due to gentrification for historically vulnerable communities, while also discussing what plans of action we need to take in designing more equitable cities across scale.
