ARUP PRESENTS - Façade: Embodied & Whole-Life Carbon
The construction industry has recently shifted its focus away from net-zero operational energy towards whole-life carbon assessments, taking the embodied carbon impacts of raw material extraction, manufacturing processes, transportation, construction, and demolition into consideration. The accelerated uptake of whole-life carbon considerations is crucial in keeping the average temperature rise above pre-industrial levels within 1.5°C. This course will help attendees distinguish between factors that impact operational energy/carbon and those that impact embodied carbon, as well as how to calculate a carbon payback period to help make design decisions. Attendees will be able to apply tangible steps to help reduce the overall carbon emissions from their building designs, and they will come away from the course with a stronger foundation in understanding how the envelope design can contribute to meaningful carbon reductions while maintaining design flexibility and occupant comfort.
